Cambridge University’s eScience Centre chooses Codian video conferencing for
CancerGrid
One in four people will be diagnosed with some type of cancer during their lifetime. The aim of
personalized medicine and CancerGrid is to help prevent, diagnose and find a cure for this devastating
disease. CancerGrid is a consortium of specialists in oncology and software engineering drawn from five
leading UK Universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Birmingham, University College London,
and Queens’ University Belfast. The CancerGrid project will deliver a working services-based grid
infrastructure for cancer clinical trials.

The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) is a high-speed network managed and operated by the Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. The network provides high-bandwidth, reliable connections to thousands
of scientists at national laboratories, universities and other institutions worldwide, enabling them to communicate
and collaborate as they tackle important scientific problems. The ESnet Collaboration Service (ECS) provides more
than 1,000 registered subscribers with collaborative IP- video, audio and data conferencing, including ad-hoc meetings.

Virginia Tech delivers enhanced distance learning with Codian
video conferencing
Founded in 1872, Virginia Tech has over 25,000 full-time students, making it one of the largest universities
in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The university offers 60 bachelor’s degree programs and 120 graduate degree programs.
The school has a long history of providing innovative distance learning to meet the needs of working adults and
nontraditional students. Approximately 85 percent of the school’s departments offer e-learning courses via
VTOnline, which has served some 60,000 students since the school began offering the service in 1998. Over 60
in-classroom courses are part of the VTOnline program, linked by interactive video to over 30 remote classroom
sites. Participants in these video conferencing sessions can see and talk to their instructors and fellow students
in other remote locations. In addition, Virginia Tech uses its interactive video conference capability to promote
communication both among their professors and between their school and others worldwide.
